New Google Adword Rule

I just read this and I thought it would be important to bring this up to all of our readers. According to Google Adwords, starting in April, the destination URL must now match your display URL, or else this will not fly with Google.

Important Change to URL Policy Enforcement
Starting in April, display URLs for new ads will be required to match their destination / landing page URLs, without exception. Please adjust your URLs accordingly when creating new ads.

What does this mean to our users, not much assuming you abide by Google's rules (which I assume you should have from the start). Here is more on what they have to say:

Tracking URLs

Your ads will be approved if the URL of your landing page domain matches that of your display URL domain.

For example, the following would be acceptable:

* Display URL: www.google.com/adwords
* Destination URL: www.trackingurl.com/google123
* Landing page URL: www.google.com

However, this example would be unacceptable:

* Display URL: www.google.com/adwords
* Destination URL: www.trackingurl.com/google123
* Landing page URL: www.trackingurl.com

Sub-Domains

The use of sub-domains and additional text within the display will continue to be acceptable, provided the top-level domain matches the URL of your landing page.

For example, the display URLs below would be acceptable for the landing page URL of http://sub.google.com/miscellaneous, as the top-level domains match:

* sub.google.com
* google.com/extratext
* www.google.com/extratext

What will this mean to affiliates? Nothing really. If you're direct linking, I assumed you should have used the display URL of the landing page even if you're using a redirect tracking URL such as the one Tracking202 provides and if you are using a Landing Page, again, you're listing the redirect URL to point towards the Landing Page URL. None of this should change anything. I believe this is more of a message to target those that list one thing and ends up pointing it to another page that has something else. So don't worry, assuming every one of you follow the rules up to this point, this won't affect you at all. Credit goes to CPA Affiliate.

    So does that mean the old ads get to stay? It just mentions new ad approval.

    Hi Matt,

    I'm not too entirely sure to be honest. I think that Google would and should apply this to all ads, not just new ads, but I can't be sure. This is something you'd have to contact Google to find out for sure.
